“The foreign ministers of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United Arab Emirates have signed an accord to set up a joint commission.

“Establishing this commission is an important step in strengthening bilateral ties,” said Manouchehr Mottaki at a joint press conference in Tehran with his Emirati counterpart Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan.

“The signing of this agreement is the result of the Iranian President’s [Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's] historic visit to the UAE,” al-Nahyan added.

President Ahmadinejad visited the Persian Gulf littoral state in May 2007 -the first visit by an Iranian head of state to the UAE since the Islamic revolution.

Mottaki said he would hold talks with his Emirati counterpart on the global financial crisis and current fluctuations in oil markets.

Both countries are members of the Organization of Petroleum Countries (OPEC), which pumps about 40 percent of the world’s oil.”
