“In spite of continued crackdown on local human rights groups in Iran, their voices can still be heard… voices like the Center for the Defense of Human Rights. The head of that center is 2003-Iranian Nobel peace laureate Shirin Ebadi. She says the center’s most recent quarterly report in November shows more human rights violations by the Islamic Republic.

During the past three months up to September 22, her group says, quote: “Four juveniles under the age of 18 and 41 adults were executed, and six individuals were publicly lashed.”

On that point, Human Rights Watch has been critical of the Islamic Republic, particularly recently on October 30. On that Thursday, Iran hanged 19-year-old Gholamreza… an Afghan in Isfahan who was convicted of a murder he committed at 17.

Human Rights Watch says Gholamreza was hanged just two days after Iranian authorities, quote, “categorically denied” that Iran still executes its minors.

The report also lists religious minorities as victims of human rights abuse in Iran. Among them are Sufi Muslims. On October 2, four dervishes of the Ne’matollahi Gonabadi order of Sufism were held in solitary confinement at the Ministry of Intelligence without charges. Other members of their group have been arrested and their Sufi centers confiscated or razed to the ground.”
