CAIR Files Obsession Complaint

“A national Islamic civil-rights group has filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission over the distribution this month of “an anti-Muslim film” to 28 million households in presidential election swing states.

A DVD of the film, “Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West,” is set to be distributed in newspapers in 14 states identified as battleground states in the Nov. 4 election, including Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico.

The insert appeared in more than 553,000 copies of The Denver Post on Sept. 14, according to company officials. Five other newspapers in Colorado also were part of the national ad buy.

Council on American-Islamic Relations spokesman Ibrahim Hooper said the complaint, mailed to the FEC on Friday, calls the Clarion Fund — the nonprofit group distributing the DVD — a “mysterious” organization misusing its tax-free status to improperly influence the election and demonize millions of Muslims.

The mass release is just one phase of The Obsession Project, launched by the New York-based Clarion Fund and a nonprofit called Endowment for Middle East Truth, an explicitly pro-Israel think tank in Washington, D.C.

“The project is to help educate the American people about the threat of radical Islam to the West,” endowment spokesman Ari Morgenstern said. “This is in no way intended to influence the election.”
